DIRECTV via Internet vs. Satellite: which should you get?

Guide · Updated September 9, 2026 Written by an independent authorized dealer

The quick answer

Reliable broadband and no appetite for an annual contract? Choose DIRECTV via Internet. Want the most channels per tier, live where internet is weak, or want your price locked for two years? Choose satellite. Package names and advertised starting prices match; delivery, contract and channel depth are what differ.

When streaming wins

For most households in 2026, DIRECTV via Internet is the one to start with. It carries no annual contract or early-termination fee, every package opens with a 5-day free trial, and setup really takes minutes: the Gemini Air plugs into an HDMI port and puts live TV, unlimited Cloud DVR, Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video in one guide. It does need dependable broadband, roughly 8 Mbps per HD stream and about 25 Mbps for 4K or several TVs. Renters, frequent movers and anyone who hates commitments should start here.

When satellite wins

Satellite carries the most channels, 175+ to 350+ per tier against 90+ to 185+ on streaming, and needs no internet at all, which still settles it across much of rural America. The 24-month agreement works both ways: leave early and you owe $20 per remaining month, but you also get a 2-year price guarantee that streaming lacks, a useful hedge after DIRECTV’s June 2026 price changes. Severe storms can briefly interrupt the signal (“rain fade”), though a well-aimed dish keeps that rare.

One 2026 caveat: in select metro markets DIRECTV has been trialing a setup where new satellite signups aren’t offered and new customers are pointed to streaming. Your agent checks what your address qualifies for on the call.

Renters, HOAs and the dish question

Landlord or HOA against a dish? Federal rules protect you more than most people realize. The FCC’s Over-the-Air Reception Devices (OTARD) rule protects your right to put up a satellite dish under one meter in space you rent or use exclusively, such as a balcony or patio, with narrow exceptions. If you’d rather skip that conversation, DIRECTV via Internet gives you the same service with nothing mounted outside, which is why renters usually pick it.

What’s the same either way

  • Package names and advertised starting prices — ENTERTAINMENT $89.99/mo. base, CHOICE $94.99, ULTIMATE $124.99, PREMIER $169.99 (streaming adds first-month promos from $59.99).
  • Regional sports networks with CHOICE and above, with a market-based RSN fee of up to $23.99/mo.
  • The DIRECTV app for watching away from home, up to 3 out-of-home streams at once.
  • Local channels where available — and on streaming you can drop locals to save $12/mo.
  • Ordering: one call to your OneClickAway agent either way, with DIRECTV fulfilling, billing and supporting the service.

The verdict

Good internet + flexibility → DIRECTV via Internet. Weak internet, maximum channels, or two years of price certainty → satellite. The catch is that it depends on your address, so your agent prices both for your ZIP on one call and tells you plainly if either one doesn’t suit you.
